# Jumper to Anthropic: watch the life-science hires, not the board reshuffle

John Jumper, the Nobel laureate who co-built AlphaFold, announced on June 19 that he is leaving Google DeepMind for Anthropic.

Anthropic has not said what he will do there. No title, no team, no start date. Anyone reporting that he will run a biology division is making it up. What is on the record is narrow: the scientist who cracked protein structure prediction is now inside the lab that filed confidentially for an IPO this month and bought a drug-discovery startup in April.

Read it next to the rest of the sequence. Allen Institute and HHMI partnerships in February. Coefficient Bio (acquired by Anthropic) in April. AI legend Andrej Karpathy on the pre-training team in May. Jumper in June. Bloomberg now reports two more Google researchers with AlphaFold roots, Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel, are headed the same way, though neither side has confirmed it.

A lot of people focused on Novartis CEO Vasant Narasimhan joining Anthropic's board earlier this year. These direct research hires will shape Anthropic in life sciences much more than that board move.
