The AI Scale Debate: Have We Hit the Ceiling on 'Bigger is Better'?
I'm seeing remarkable productivity gains using AI daily, but some industry insiders are signaling we may be approaching the limits of the current 'scale-up' approach to LLMs. Here's my take on the three emerging pathways that could define what comes next.

While I'm seeing remarkable productivity gains using AI daily (ChatGPT and Claude have become my indispensable thinking partners), some industry insiders are signaling we may be approaching the limits of the current 'scale-up' approach: https://lnkd.in/eKpiSQx4.
Three emerging pathways are particularly intriguing:
- Specialized, smaller models optimized for specific tasks (I work with several startups that follow that promising approach)
- Novel architectures like the Strawberry/O1 "reasoning" approach (where AI engages in self-dialogue)
- Enhanced multimodal capabilities combining text, vision, and code (again, some first impressive results from startups that I'm advising)
From my experience leading AI initiatives, I've observed that targeted applications in enterprise settings are already delivering substantial ROI. This makes me bullish on AI's future, even as we potentially shift away from the 'bigger is better' paradigm.
