Anthropic's Frontier Academy: Palantir's FDE Model Meets SAP's Ecosystem Playbook

Anthropic wants 10,000 Frontier Deployed Engineers trained by the end of 2027 and has put $100 million behind it. I think it may be combining Palantir's FDE model with SAP's ecosystem economics.

TL;DR

The "Claude Frontier Academy" was announced last Friday. Companies nominate their engineers, each arriving with a named Claude project. They go through a multi-day in-person course with Anthropic engineers, take a graded practical on a simulated enterprise deployment, then lead a real use case at their own company for 12 weeks before a second assessment.

The first Frontier Deployed Engineer badges are expected in early 2027. Cohorts are already running in San Francisco, New York and London with engineers from Accenture, Bain, Capgemini, Deloitte, McKinsey, Morgan Stanley, Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Novo Nordisk.

Consulting firms and pharma RFPs

Five of the eight companies Anthropic names in the first cohorts are consulting firms. Accenture, Bain, Capgemini, Deloitte and McKinsey are now building teams with direct Anthropic training and Frontier Deployed Engineer credentials. I would not be surprised if pharma RFPs soon start asking how many of these people a vendor has, much as companies once asked for SAP-certified consultants.

This also adds (potentially) another layer of lock-in around the model. Skills, credentials, implementation experience and eventually careers start accumulating around a platform. Diffusion of AI across large enterprises is still in its early stages. Palantir has been remarkably successful with its FDE approach in recent years, while companies like SAP built entire consulting ecosystems around their platforms.

Anthropic may be combining two of enterprise software's most successful playbooks: Palantir's FDE model and SAP's ecosystem economics. What I'm still curious about, will this approach actually help large enterprises revisit their processes for agentic enablement?
