Investors have poured nearly $1 billion into the AI scribe market this year, and this week's announcements from Doximity and Ambience Healthcare drew the battle lines clearly: is ambient AI documentation a free commodity feature, or the foundation of a dominant clinical workflow platform?
Free feature or foundational platform? Investors have poured nearly $1 billion into the AI scribe market this year to find the answer.
This week, the battle lines were drawn with two major announcements:
-
Doximity made its ambient scribe free, pushing the technology towards becoming a commodity (see my post yesterday for more details)
-
And now Ambience Healthcare raised $243M to build a deeply integrated platform, aiming to create a powerful moat
It's clear that automated documentation is just the beginning. The ultimate goal is to own the clinical workflow itself.
Will we see a new dominant player emerge, an "Epic" for the AI era? Or is this a race to the bottom where the feature gets absorbed by existing platforms?
Let me know what you think in the comments.
