Bill Gates now predicts that AI will replace many doctors and teachers within 10 years.

He's the same Gates who coined the famous quote: "Most people overestimate what they can achieve in a year and underestimate what they can achieve in ten years."

Right now, we are likely just past the peak of the initial (Gen-) AI hype. People are starting to realize that change, even with AI technology, is hard. So many of us are probably indeed currently underestimating the impact the technology over a 10 year time frame.

But do I think Gates is right?

At least for medicine, I actually think he may be underestimating how hard it is to fix systems that are already deeply broken.

Many of our healthcare systems are dysfunctional. In the US, for example, incentives are deeply misaligned, and elsewhere things aren't much better.

Will the technology be ready? Absolutely.

Will the systems and ways of working truly change that much? I'm not so sure.

What do you think? Is Gates being bold, or too optimistic?
